A 'Slumdog' glitters India

This trenchant heading is bound to hoard in a lot of pugnacious debates and debacles. So, keeping in view all the pestles, I dedicate my first blog to the subject which is to be history for the years to come. [ An opportune moment for a self proclaimed movie buff ]

It took a February 23, 2009 to bring in the 8.5lb gold-plated knight to our soil and that too not ones or twos but an almost unbelievable streak of three. We haven’t forgotten Ms Athaiya or Mr. Ray here, just that they brought it home in the pre NDTV- CNN IBN- TIMES NOW- rules-our-living-room era. So all we could see was the clippings in newspapers which seemed a distant dream like a rocket launch. [ The scene depicted was a quarter century back ]

But now, this penury to prosperity tale of a young man instilled hope, will, optimism and also the knowledge that reality shows do get aired live too and when they do, they change lives which may eventually result in an Oscar. [ This is willingly and knowingly calling for a coup de grace ]

All pun aside, and with due respect to Mr. Swarup and Mr. Boyle and ( in his words ) for all the people who helped him make this piece of art and the ones who didn’t, I express my appreciation and happiness. Under other circumstances if it was not a Danny Boyle film, it would have been a ‘foreign language’ categorized film representing India which isn’t news to us. I’d vehemently banish ( :D quite truly) anyone who says this isn’t an Indian film. As long as Mumbai remains ours, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is very much an Indian and Indians’ film.

On an ending note, amidst all these adulations, gung-ho’s and Jai Ho’s , let us not drown a charming little Pinki smiling at us jubilantly which undeniably is magnanimous than a millionaire’s million dollar one !!!!
